The California Mastitis Test (CMT) is the best method available for finding dairy cows that may have a mastitis infection. Using the CMT at least once a month cuts down on chances of early stages of mastitis going unnoticed.
The California mastitis test (CMT) is a simple cow-side indicator of the somatic cell count of milk. It operates by disrupting the cell membrane of any cells present in the milk sample, allowing the DNA in those cells to react with the test reagent, forming a gel.
To use, squirt milk from each teat into paddle, add equal amount of the reagent, and swirl slowly by rotating paddle. Immediate gel formation means that the udder half probably has mastitis infection; further lab work should be done. Kit includes testing paddle, dispensing bottle, written instructions, and one pint of concentrated reagent. A simple, quick, accurate, inexpensive tool for good dairy management. Replacement reagent also available. Introductory kit for mastitis detection and control. The California Mastitis Kit (CMT) measures somatic cell counts through a special reagent in a four-chambered paddle.
