Phenol red, the pH indicator, is affected by the presence of dermatophytes (Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton spp.), which all produce alkaline metabolites.

Vials are made of shatter resistant polycarbonate plastic with a wide mouth opening for easy inoculation.
