Deoxyribonucleoprotein (DNP) is the antigen to which SLE autoantibodies are directed. Stabilized latex particles coated with DNP will agglutinate when mixed with serum from SLE patients. This makes the latex test a useful qualitative and semiquantitative screening test for SLE.
